Notes on the Farms in Plains/Kameland Hexes

Bush Bush Tax Farmer GP: Tax Farmer
Bushels/acre lb/Bush Use Resow lbs Tax SP/lb sp/acre sp/acre 20 ac 20/ac
Wheat 30 60 15 2 780 .1 18.0 60.0 3.6 12
Rye 20 55 10 2 440 .15 16.5 49.5 3.3 9.9
Oats 30 35 15 3 420 .15 15.5 46.5 3.1 9.3
Barley 25 50 10 2 650 .1 15.0 50 3.5 9.5
Feed hay spec. 60 0.5

Feed hay is 200 bales per acre with 60 lbs per bale
Cattle eat 30 lbs per day
Cattle must survive on hay for 120 days per year with granging (winter)

20 acres = 8000 cattle days of granging = ~ 64 cattle with granging
= ~ 22 cattle without granging
Simplified: 1 cattle per acre without granging
3 cattle per acre with granging

Maintained herd = 1 cattle
Calves for beef = 0.5 cattle and is = to Maintained cattle
So, on a beef farm = 40 calves with granging at ½ gp per calve = 20 gp
= 13.3 calves without granging at ½ gp per calve = 6.6 gp

Beef taxed Granging = 5 gp Tax, 15 gp Farmer (assumes resale of leather)
Non Granging = 1.6 gp Tax, 5 gp farmer

For Dairy Use tax and farmer values for beef, but assume it is for milk/cheese

Sheep herd = 0.2 cattle
Use tax and farmer values for beef, but assume it is for wool

Each farm will consist of four 20 acre fields
• 1 20 acre field for either wheat or rye (good grain in poor soils),
• 1 20 acre field for feed hay
• 1 20 acre field for oats (meal, horse and pig feed) or barley (beer, animal feed, and mash)
• 1 20 acre field to remain fallow (allowing for recovery of soil fertility)
• + 80 acres of land owned by the king but used as grange land by the farmer’s livestock

Given each hex is 125 square miles, and each 160 acre parcel composes one quarter of a square mile, a hex full of farms will contain 500 farms:

Average annual farmer income per hex: 35 gp x 500 = 17,500 gp/hex
Average annual Tax per hex: 12 gp x 500 = 6,000 gp/hex

A city hex with a 3 mile radius boundary will have 400 farms:

Average annual farmer income per city hex: 35 gp x 400 = 14,000 gp/hex
Average annual Tax per city hex 12 gp x 400 = 4,800 gp/hex
